It’s not optimal to be a fringy fourth-outfielder in a system particularly deep in fourth outfielders. Donnie Dewees offers a little bit of everything—power, speed, hit—but as you read that sentence to yourself, put the stress on the “little bit” rather than the “everything.”

In a full season at Double-A, following a trade from the Cubs for right-hander Alec Mills, Dewees kept hitting and even walked a bit more. Any and all trips to first base are likely to prove useful for the speedy Dewees, thief of 20 bases in 2017. He might be destined for (stop me if you’ve heard this before) fourth-outfielder status, but there’s also a chance that his perpetually solid batting average turns into something more. He got into nine homers at Double-A and the more advanced pitching didn't noticeably ding his bat-to-ball skills.

If Donnie Dewees proves he can recognize pitches out of the zone as effectively as he can barrel up those inside it, he could be a .280 hitter with power. See ball, hit ball has worked so far, but Dewees will need a more thoughtful approach.

A 2015 second-rounder out of North Florida, Donnie Dewees' bat could and should develop into a serious asset in center field, but his initial taste of pro ball was uninspiring.
