Wisdom surfaces in the national consciousness from time to time when he goes on a homer binge like the one he orchestrated in April, socking eight homers in his first 14 games. The holes in his swing are so known and so pronounced, though, that few expected what we were seeing was some new trick from this old dog. The skeptics were proven right when Wisdom went ice cold—he finished the first half hitting .190/.279/.451 with a 39.1% strikeout percentage, even with the hot start baked in—and in the season’s second half he was relegated to a bench role behind Nick Madrigal. The contrast between the two, and the decision to side with Madrigal, says a lot about how the organization views the hot corner moving forward.

Wisdom may not hit righties very well, or have a lot of success at Wrigley Field, and he hit under .200 for the last two months of the season, but last year the 31-year-old utility did hit 25 home runs for the second time. He struggles with off-speed stuff, which he's seen more and more as the years have gone by, and he's most effective against hittable fastballs, but you know. Who isn't. Our new DRP metric judges him as a passable defender at multiple positions, so he should stick around as the Cubs hope to enter a new phase.

As Apple endeavors to make once-necessary items like home buttons and headphone jacks obsolete, so does Wisdom suggest the Three True Outcomes player is a relic, unwieldy as an onboard CD drive. Why have three where two will do? It’s a calculation that only works if the player in question is possessed with Wisdom’s Ruthian power. His gaudy home run totals balance out the equally gaudy-but-in-the-bad-way strikeout rate, and there’s a real question as to whether he’ll ever see a fastball in the zone again, as he whiffs over half the time on off-speed along and has a propensity for chasing high heat. Wisdom believers point to former teammate Kyle Schwarber, who also had to learn to cut down on his whiffs, but it’s likely Wisdom's strike zone approach is, to borrow another bygone tech term, WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get). That means he’ll have to keep hitting the perfectly optimized snot out of the ball every time he can make contact, a line that demands more delicate balance than placing your iPhone on an airplane sink.

Despite his surname, Patrick Wisdom hasn’t proven smart enough to avoid striking out in 40 percent of his career plate appearances. As such, he's exactly the type of Quad-A talent Jerry Dipoto swears he can stop collecting at any time, no really, he’s in total control.

Just a fortnight shy of his 27th birthday, Wisdom finally punched his ticket to the majors. Before that, he punched many, many bus and meal tickets across the country, racking up over 1,200 plate appearances in Triple-A Memphis alone. He also punched out many, many times, and he continued to do so once he reached The Show. Wisdom has good power, but whether it's enough depends on how often he can make contact. He's made gradual improvements in plate discipline, but whether he can sustain those against big leaguers with any regularity depends on how often can make contact. He's a serviceable third baseman, but doesn't really add value with the glove, so even whether he's good enough in the field depends on how often he can make contact.

"Never forget, that until the day God will deign to reveal the future to man, all human [Patrick] Wisdom is contained in these two words, 'wait and hope.'"
2015

Patrick Wisdom continued his spot-on Patrick Wisdom impersonation with occasional flashes of brilliance in the field, sufficient power for third and way too many strikeouts to convince us his bat has turned the corner; he needs another crack at the Double-A weeder class.
2014
https://www.baseballprospectus.com/static/images/annual-covers/2014.jpg
The opinions on Wisdom were already wide-ranging before a rough season that saw his long swing exposed to the tune of a 26 percent strikeout rate. The strikeouts are made more tolerable by Wisdom's virtues: He displays strike-zone discernment, has pop and provides legitimate defensive value at the hot corner. In fact, his glove was part of the reason Stephen Piscotty shifted to the outfield. The Cardinals are flush with third base talent, but Wisdom is the furthest along. If he can shave down the strikeouts in 2014, he'll finish in Triple-A.
2013

Yet another interesting prospect in a system positively rank with them, Wisdom spent his first pro season raking in short-season ball. Of course that’s what you would expect a college draftee to do, but it sure beats not raking in short-season ball. Wisdom is a plus defender at third base, with agility, soft hands, and a strong arm. If he can continue to show a good approach at the plate and add some juice to his bat, he could have a career.
