2008 Catcher Eliezer Alfonzo tore ligaments in his left knee and missed three months while having it scoped. Meanwhile, Guillermo Rodriguez claimed the backup role with the big club. Apparently, an injury can cost you your job 2007 Alfonzo was called up in early June to replace the concussed Matheny, and held on to the job until September, when a concussion of his own forced him to the bench. Alfonzo started hitting really well for the first time in his career in 2005, and the Giants were planning on calling him up, but he was suspended for a substance abuse violation in the minors. He almost won the backup job coming out of spring training last year, but lost it to Todd Greene. Job well done, but he figures to regress in 2007. 2006 Alfonzo is an organizational soldier who started knocking the ricotta out of the ball in 2005. The Giants were all set to tap him for the backup spot in the majors when they traded Yorvit Torrealba to Seattle, but Alfonzo was on the hook for a substance abuse violation, so Yamid Haad got the nod instead. The Giants re-signed Alfonzo at the end of the year and sent him to the instructional league to work on his receiving skills.
