American League
Perhaps not everyone considers him a rookie, but 32-year-old
Kazuhiro Sasaki convinced enough voters to win the
2000 IBA Rookie of the Year award in the American
League.
The voting pattern indicates that Sasaki’s age and
experience in the Japanese Leagues may have been
a factor. He appeared on 57 fewer ballots than
runner-up Terrence Long, but was the top selection
of more than 60% of those who did include him.
Mark Quinn and Barry Zito were the clear #3
and #4 choices.

National League
The National League rookie voting was just as close,
with Rick Ankiel edging Rafael Furcal by fewer
than 100 points.
Unlike the AL race, the NL balloting was a two-man
affair. Ankiel and Furcal each received more first-
and second-place votes than everyone else combined.
Mitch Meluskey edged Pat Burrell for third place.
