OMAR VIZQUEL JOINS ANGELS AS INFIELD INSTRUCTOR
"It's a great presence that he brings, and it comes from his accomplishments—a long career that we believe culminates in the Hall of Fame. We're thrilled to have him."
Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto, on the hiring of 11-time Gold Glove winner Omar Vizquel, who will serve as the team’s roving infield instructor. (Alden Gonzalez, MLB.com)

"He was gung-ho; he was all for it. We're fortunate to have him. I feel like this is the start of a next great career for Omar Vizquel, and we're glad he's doing it as an Angel. We're pretty pumped about him being involved."
—Dipoto.

"Omar had the best timing, or internal clock, of any infielder I ever watched. I don't know if he can pass on the internal clock, but he can pass on a lot of the little tips and nuances, and at the end of the day, we feel like he's the type of guy who can really go in and make a difference in a young player's career. And I'm excited to see where he goes with it."
—Dipoto.

RODNEY OPTIMISTIC ABOUT EXTENSION
"It's in plans already. We've talked a few times, and I expect it to get finalized this month."
—Rays closer Fernando Rodney, on the prospect of signing an extension with the club. The 35-year-old enjoyed a career year in 2012, posting a career-high 48 saves with 0.60 ERA. (Alden Gonzalez, MLB.com)

"We're still in the planning stages, still negotiating. You know, these negotiations take time because you have to weigh all your options."
—Rodney.

THE REST
“The news report about a purported relationship between Alex Rodriguez and Anthony Bosch are not true. Alex Rodriguez was not Mr. Bosch's patient, he was never treated by him, and he was never advised by him. The purported documents referenced in the story—at least as they relate to Alex Rodriguez—are not legitimate."
—A statement issued by a spokesman for Alex Rodriguez, in response to the PED allegations made against him in a Miami New Times report on Thursday. (Bryan Hoch, MLB.com)

"All contracts have moral clauses. It will come down to the language in (Rodriguez's) contract. If it is a normal moral clause, (the Yankees) won't have much of a case."
—A “baseball official who handles contract negotiations,” dispelling the notion that the Yankees will be able to void Alex Rodriguez’s contract due to the recent PED allegations. (David Brown, Yahoo! Sports)

"It's all about representing the Dominican Republic. I give everything for my country. You see a lot of players here in Mexico do the same. That's a beautiful thing, when you sport your flag and your country across your chest."
—Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez, on playing for his Dominican Republic team during the winter. (Alden Gonzalez, MLB.com)

"Since I got to the big leagues, I've been looking for security—to be in the right spot and not have to worry about going to free agency. The way I am right now, I'm happy. I'm going to play more relaxed. I think we made a good deal. I made a good decision and I am happy."
—New Diamondback Martin Prado, who signed a four-year, $40 million extension after arriving in Arizona via trade from Atlanta. (Steve Gilbert, MLB.com)

"The process of arbitration is never that easy, and in this case, it's a good raise. We're happy it's done. Chase earned his salary."
—Padres general manager Josh Byrnes, on resolving the salary of breakout third baseman Chase Headley. (Corey Brock, MLB.com)

"I had a little problem when I moved over to second … [and] it transferred to my offense. I had a lot coming at me and it wasn't clicking. That bothered me. Once everything calmed down, it was better. […] My sophomore summer in college, I split time and was sort of a utility guy. I played second and third. The majority of the time was in left field with some time in center and right."
—Padres infielder Logan Forsythe, who the team is grooming as a super-utility player with outfield reps this offseason. (Corey Brock, MLB.com)

"I spent a lot of time running and working on my techniques about running. That's what I did. I ran a lot and I learned how to run. Because last year … you know I'm slow, but I want to run a little better and gain a little more speed and all that. So that's what I did, just run."
—Mariners catcher Jesus Montero, on training to improve his running ability during the offseason. (Greg Johns, MLB.com)

"I feel like I can still throw it well, and going out on a high note is a big deal. I just felt it was time to be closer to home and be around the kids more often."
—No-hitter club member Kevin Millwood, who announced his retirement Sunday after 16 major-league seasons. (Zack Meisel, MLB.com)

"I have no problem with anybody in New York, any fan, saying you're overpaid. Because I am … we all are… Agents are probably going to hate me for saying it … you're not very valuable when you're making $20 million. When you're Mike Trout, making the minimum, you are crazy valuable. My first six years, before I was a free agent, I was very valuable. But there's nothing you can do that can justify a $20 million contract."
—Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira, acknowledging that he is overpaid. (Daniel Barbarisi, Wall Street Journal)

“If all five starters go out there and do their jobs, stay healthy and get the goal of 200-plus innings, then I think that will fill R.A.’s shoes in itself—having those five guys make 30-plus starts.”
Newly acquired Mets starting pitcher Shaun Marcum, on not feeling like he needs to fill R.A. Dickey’s shoes by himself. (Mike Puma, NYPost.com)

He used to tell me that if he could've he would've used two gloves to catch Phil Niekro's knuckleball."

“I’d go first time (you get caught) you miss a full season, 162 games you’re out," Holliday said, according to a transcript of the show provided to The Post-Dispatch. "And then the second time I think you are suspended for a lifetime with the eligibility after two years maybe to apply for reinstatement. That’s what I would do. I feel like that’s pretty harsh but I think that’s what we need. I think we need harsher penalties. I think that would be a good start.”

“I think there’s a chance we get something worked out. We’re talking about the details—how much opportunity is there.”

“He's one of the crown jewels of our organization. He's come to the forefront, not just within our city but on a national basis now. Back-to-back All-Star Game appearances, a Silver Slugger (award), a Gold Glove. People within our industry from coast to coast know who Andrew McCutcheon is; a man built on tremendous core values, a young man who has found his way. As good as he is on the field, he's just as determined and consistent and passionate about things he cares about off the field.”

“Even in Cleveland when I wasn't very good, the bullpen was still good, and getting those guys in the mind-set of being successful year over year was important to me. And last year—kind of figuring out why those guys hit the wall when they did, and try to get them through that to be better big leaguers, that's kind of the idea.”
Phillies reliever Chad Durbin on the role of spreading knowledge to his teammates. (Todd Zolecki, MLB.com)

If you're going to Tweet your innocence, why pay for agents and lawyers?

To do the tweets for you. Many celebs have full time social media consultants that manage Twitter and other social media outlets. I doubt Gio does, but you never know.

I'm sure he ran that by someone beforehand. Not a bad strategy from a PR standpoint. Making a statement that people know is you, directly. Humanizes the player.
