I'm going to start using the phrase "dead rubber" in every day life. That is spectacular.

With regards to the question about trading for a pitcher for game 163: why isn't this allowed already? I think I remember there being noise that the Red Sox were going to do something like this in 2011 if necessary.

As long as the player clears waivers, he can be traded anytime after July 31. And August 31 isn't the waiver trade deadline; it's the deadline to add players to your organization for the postseason. But the question assumed he wouldn't be on the playoff roster, right? Am I wrong on something?

That was part of the premise. The pitcher would be asked to participate in a one-night stand, and frankly, I'm not sure if many of them would appreciate that. Not to mention the travel and logistics it would involve. So it might have as much to do with respect to the player as to the league.

Plus, if it stood to be his only game with the team, would he have much incentive to "bring his A-game" (a cliche that actually seems apt here)?

BTW, I think we've had Star Trek, Star Wars, and Lost cold openings within a week. I like.
