We decided to do things a little differently this year.

For the past few seasons, we have published separate top-101 dynasty lists. Largely, these lists have been similar, with the exception of chunky first basemen ranking much higher on Bret’s iteration and Ben giving dramatic boosts to any middle infielder who can run even a little. For the 2017 list, we decided to balance those biases by creating separate rankings, compiling them and then debating minutia for like a month over gchat. Fantasy prospect rankings are nothing if not scientific.

This is an interesting year for said rankings. There’s less premium talent at the top, and even the top-20 gets pretty thin near the end. But there’s more depth than there was last year, with a solid, meaty middle chunk of the list that’s chock-full of OF4s, SP5s and the like. There might not be a ton of prospects who will win you a dynasty league in this year’s iteration, but there are plenty who can help you along the way. Another consequence of that lack of premium talent? We got a little aggressive in trying to predict who the next generation of dynasty studs will be, bumping up some players with extreme risk/reward profiles. If that’s not your thing, feel free to adjust down, but if you can get in on the next Victor Robles or Ronald Acuna, well, you’ll want to.

There are a few list-specific disclaimers to go over before we jump in. Again, these rankings are for fantasy purposes only, and do not directly take into account things like an outfielder’s ability to stick in center or a catcher’s pop time. Of course, these things do matter indirectly as they affect a player’s ability to either stay in the lineup or maintain eligibility. Additionally, home parks need to be factored in, just as when we are talking about a major-league player. We can’t pretend that these prospects operate in a vacuum, unaffected by park factors. Of course, there’s no guarantee that they will reach the majors with their current organization, so while it is not a heavy consideration, it is reflected. Most importantly, the intention of this list is to balance the upside, probability, and proximity of these players to an active fantasy lineup.

Within the list below, you’ll find important information about each prospect, including their potential fantasy value (in dollars) at their peak and the risk factor associated with reaching their projected output. Also, you will find a fantasy overview, which summarizes how many categories each player will be useful in, along with any that carry impact. For this exercise, we defined “impact” has having the potential to be in the top 15-20 players in a given category. For instance, impact in home runs roughly equates to the potential to hit 30, and impact for strikeouts is the potential to punch out 200. Then you’ll see a realistic ceiling and floor for each prospect, purely in terms of rotisserie value. The comments are specifically brief because we’ve already written fantasy-specific comments on each of these players in the individual top-10 lists.

Without any further ado, here is newest batch of the best 101 prospects for dynasty leagues:

CTL+F "Cron"

Yep, this is a good list.

The ceilings and floors are always fantastic on these. Personal favorite may be the Jason Groome floor.

It looks like the Dynasty 101 has a slightly different order than the newly drafted/signed player rankings that Bret put out weeks ago. Is this due to commiseration with a co-writer, or change of opinion?
BenC22
2/23
Glad you enjoyed it! I'd say most of the change is due to Bret having to deal with me and some of it is based on feedback we got throughout this process.
bretsayre
2/23
Not a change of my personal opinion, no. Any changes from that list to now is a product of teamwork.
heterodude
2/23
Who were the most contentious players to rank?
BenC22
2/23
Bret was higher on Happ, Collins, Dom Smith and Taveras. I was higher on Barreto, Zimmer, Sisco and Yusniel Diaz. Wouldn't say any of them were particularly contentious, though. Maybe Happ but I know I'm gonna lose that battle :)

Great work this year guys. All ranking debate aside, this article was just absolutely hilarious and fun. I laughed 101 times!
bjjfan
2/23
That was fun.

One question though: Why is Tapia 13 on this list but 42 on the baseball prospectus 101? If you really believe that he's either Herrera or Inciarte(but in Coors), shouldn't he be higher than 42? Those are pretty nice players who would be even better in Coors.

Thanks
BenC22
2/23
Three main reasons
1) Tapia gets a boost for Coors in this list but is evaluated independently of Coors in the IRL 101
2) Tapia gets dinged a bit for his defense (he's probably a LF) on the IRL 101
3) Bret and I did not contribute to the IRL 101 rankings
bretsayre
2/23
What Ben said. But also, it's pretty common for bat-first prospects to show up significantly higher on a dynasty list than a true prospect list. Tapia is not really an outlier in that department, and he's definitely a bat-first prospect.
mdthomp

J.P. Crawford is a tough player to rank in fantasy circles. Everyone no doubt loves him outside of the fantasy realm, but I'll honestly be really surprised if he's ever a top 10 fantasy shortstop. Last year, which is likely to admittedly be an outlier, the tenth shortstop on ESPN formats was Trevor Story and his .272/67/27/72/8 line.
BenC22
2/23
Also, no one's asked yet, but I'm planning on publishing a list of the next ~50-75 names at some point in the next few weeks. It won't be a strict ranking like this, but it should help those of you in deeper leagues where most of these 101 guys are gone!

2/23
Awesome, looking forward to it. I'm guessing Miguelangel Sierra and Fernando Tatis Jr. are just too far away for this list?
bretsayre
2/23
Tatis was pretty close this year. Both are good names to keep an eye on for a 2018 jump.
shuttsdown
2/23
Thoughts on Michael ghettys and lazaro armenteros?
bretsayre
2/23
Both are very toolsy players who could shoot up this list either in 2018 or 2019. That said, I'm not super optimistic that their overall fantasy profiles will develop. Gettys would have made a top-150. Lazarito would not have.
HRoark
2/23
Great work as always - I look forward to this list every year. Two questions - I'm surprised to not see Jose DeLeon not higher on this list. What's the concern? Also - no love for Luke Weaver? Thanks again - hope you'll do a chat or devote a podcast to the list
bretsayre
2/23
Not concern so much as that he's a mid-rotation arm and mid-rotation arms just don't carry the appropriate amount of upside for the risk they provide in just being pitchers. Weaver is more of the same except I think he'll miss fewer bats than De Leon, and that just won't cut it in fantasy leagues.
DmanofGod1
2/23
Did Ramon Loreano receive any consideration for the list? If the breakout is real, you have a valuable HR, SB and OBP player.
bretsayre
2/23
Minor consideration, but I don't think the breakout is real enough for us to start giving him deference on a fantasy list. Is he pretty likely to be a major leaguer? Sure. He'll need to do it for a longer period of time in the upper minors to push his way onto this list though. (Also this is for AVG leagues, not OBP ones.)
BuckarooBanzai
2/23
Don't let him talk you off that ledge, my friend. Especially if your league's an OBP league, and triple-especially if you score doubles and triples, he's a really solid end-game target. Agree that he's not *quite* 101 material for a standard-league list, but he profiles similarly to Greg Allen with a potential tick or two of additional power, and would be knocking a lot louder on the door as a riser in OBP/points formats.
lowguppy
2/23
Love those ceilings and floors. Matt Thaiss sure sounds a lot better when he's not being comped to CJ Cron.
BenC22

You should have listed Dom Smith's floor as James Loney - that would have infuriated half of the Mets fan base and made the other half giddy.
bigchiefbc
2/23
Distance between Bobby Bradley and Casey Gillaspie?
BenC22
2/23
Pretty massive for me. Gillaspie is a better bet to make the majors but not as anything substantial in fantasy. It probably won't work for Bradley, but if it does you'll want to own him.
dpotemkin
2/23
Ugh. The realistic floor comments always serve as a good reminder that prospects will -- are very likely to -- break my heart. And yet I can't help but keep getting high on their potential.

Thanks for the list, friends. Great work, as always.

This list is the #1, #2 and #3 reason I subscribe to BP. Great work. Q: If eligible, where would you rank Otani on this list?
bretsayre
2/24
Thanks! Otani is just about impossible to rank because he's clearly major-league ready but his ETA is completely up in the air. If I assume he won't come to the majors until at least 2019 or 2020, I'd slot him into the 10-15 range. And that's what I'd assume at this point.
davinhbrown
2/23
obviously the dollar values are more for if they approach their peak/ceiling in potential earnings.

While I found a lot of the comments amusing, a lot of the realistic floors seemed pretty well-off. But I suppose the risk factor has to be mixed into the ceilings/floors as well.

BenC22
2/23
Curious what you mean by the floors are off? If you mean they're not low enough, well, we thought this would be more entertaining than writing "not a major leaguer" like 70 times. But if you're coming at it from another angle, I'm interested!
davinhbrown
2/24
Obviously, the floor for all these guys is not making the majors. And yes, I did laugh many times and enjoyed the humor. Actually reminded me of the old Rotisserie Baseball books [I think by Glen Waggoner?] in the 90's.

I'll give a few examples-
Almora floor is John Jay. Jay's had a long career now, and had 2 or 3 years as fantasy useful with the Cards. I'd think Almora realistic floor would be AAA guy who gets called up for injury replacement because he can't hit, or is an annual Sept callup.

I'm not going to give any other examples, because after thinking it over some more, it all depends on our perspective for the comps you give. I'm an avid NL only player, so Jay was a useful player for a while. I looked at Jay for a few years as a potential 10-15 HR/SB guy with good avg. For the offensively challenged Almora, that'd be a good career. Whereas a mixed player likely looks down on Jay. or maybe one may look at the last year or two and see Jay's opportunity as an everyday or strong-side platoon is gone and he is just a lefty bench bat for the next 4-6 years.

This list format was not meant for long drawn-out explanations of the ceilings, floors, and risks. If I want to find out why Almora or any other player comps that way, I should just look into it myself.

The floors just seemed optimistic when I read it, and maybe I should just enjoy the thoughtful rankings, the humor, and any I disagree with should cause me to look into why.

Thanks for the work. Enjoy the lists and the podcast and everything.

Last year Gallo ranked #8. I know his downside is still a windmill, but where would he land here? At just 3 at bats above the threshold, feel it's still fair to ask!
BenC22
2/24
Certainly fair. He'd be in the 20-30 range for me, but I'm high on him.
Eddy5791

Gillaspie seems like a nice medium price target in OBP leagues. Seems a little underrated.
Nonie Williams, Suely Matias, Estevan Florial, Brandon Marsh, Jesus Sanchez, Brayan Hernandez, Shed Long...any of these kids come close considering the tools?
BenC22
2/24
Nope, none came close. Hernandez and Long will be on the next 75 piece that comes out in a week or two.

akkratte
2/24
As always, this list is fantastic. I really appreciate the fact that you guys didn't ignore the existence of Nick Williams because he had a bad month (ahemm...MLB.com).

One suggestion though. While I love the humor, I'd appreciate more the ability to actually understand the ceiling/floor of some of these players.

-Lots and lots of Combo Meals
-The reason Mauricio Rubio spontaneously combusts one day
-Moon of My Life
-Ben and Craig won’t want to talk to Bret about him ever again
-A faster-than-normal oil change
-A ham-and-cheese sandwich with a delightful honey dijon spread
-A Trump press conference
-Looks too much like Eli Manning

I get what you're trying to say. "Lots and lots of combo meals" = high ceiling. But what kind of high ceiling? Are we thinking Matt Kemp here, or Torii Hunter? I'm just using this as an example because I have Brinson and know his comps, but some of the other ones leave me thinking "man, I wish I knew what the comp actually means, because "a faster-than normal oil change" can be good, but it doesn't give me any idea of how good or bad.
BenC22
2/24
A fair note, but as we mentioned in the intro, I've gone deeper on all 101 of these prospects (and 200+ more) in the individual top-10 lists. I'd suggest reading those if you want more detailed dynasty info on a player. This list is really just a recap, though maybe we could link directly to each 101 caption if we do this next year. Thanks for reading!

Where would Michael Conforto fall if eligible?
derekdeg
2/27
Just dont get why margot continues to fall in your eyes when he continues to put up great numbers. W/ the SB boost nowadays its hard to believe that he will only be a OF3. I absolutely love your guys work, but sometimes I think your hate of bad teams clouds the view.

Yes the Padres are bad, but they have some pretty good players. A future allstar floor with the red sox (based off your own lists) now has a ceiling of an OF3 on the Padres. Just seems a little off.

derekdeg
2/27
future allstar ceiling***
BenC22
2/27
Think it might be important to differentiate between fantasy and IRL lists here. He does probably have the upside of an IRL all-star because of his defense. That doesn't matter in fantasy, though, and while 30-plus steals are super valuable, he doesn't bring a ton else to tha table (maybe runs). Frankly, I think his placement here says we like him plenty.
bretsayre
2/27
And we would have gotten away with it too if it wasn't for you pesky kids..

In all seriousness, ignoring the "you hate my team" stuff, there's no reason to project Margot as more than an OF3 right now. Yes, steals are great, but Margot doesn't project to be a 40-steal guy. And what do you have outside of that? He's unlikely to be an impact batting average contributor, though he has the potential get on base and hit at the top of the lineup, which is why we gave him impact potential in runs scored. The power doesn't look like it will be a factor and the profile doesn't leave much room for RBI.

With that profile, and really good CF defense, he could certainly be an occasional All-Star. There are plenty of All-Stars who are really good, but not elite, fantasy performers. And we do like him quite a bit, which is why he was ranked in the top-25.
derekdeg
2/27
Padres are not my team. Red Sox fan here actually. And please dont take this negatively, and if it came off rough that'd what I get for commenting on my phone during lunch breaks. I honestly love your guys' work and any time TINO podcast gets released my drive to work is instantly better.

I just find it interesting. I see other sites say 15 HR, 30ish Steals, and a decent avg in the .270ish range. Its hard to peg what is run total will be until we see how myers, renfroe, and others turn out. But put it together and that seems quite a bit like a starling marte lite to me.
derekdeg
2/27
Just went back and looked at the old report and now I just feel like I plagiarized those stats.

"but with the potential to hit .270 and slug 15-18 homers at peak, he could provide Brett Gardner-type fantasy value (the 30-steal version, not the 50-steal version)"

My comp is different but the end result seems the same. I dunno, maybe my thought of what constitutes an OF3 is different. Everyone always has differing opinions, it's what makes this fun, I just see a lot more in this profile.
akkratte
3/20
Eh. Those numbers don't do it for me. I like the 30 steals. But only .270? 15 HR? Danny Valencia can put up those numbers.
