So here we are, in the “underdog” series, in no small part because this series is the one featuring the two American League playoff teams that New Yorkers don’t know about. One team wasn’t supposed to be able to beat the Yankees, and the other wasn’t supposed to beat the team that was supposed to beat the Yankees. Dominant provincialism is so cute, isn’t it?
Unstoppable force, immovable object, best hitter of all time versus…well, if not exactly the best, one of the game’s best rotations.
ANAHEIM ANGELS
Purchased the contract of C-R Sal Fasano from Salt Lake. [9/16]
Hopefully, Fasano is up to finish the season behind the plate now that the Angels have clinched that last playoff spot, allowing Los Dos Molinas a chance to get a couple of days off before the playoffs. As somebody with a weak spot in my heart/head for catchers with that Mark Parent/Dave Duncan offensive profile, the guy who can throw a little and pound a home run every couple of weeks, regular readers know I’ve always coughed up plenty of kind words on behalf of Sal Fasano

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
Placed INF-L Craig Counsell on the 15-day DL (neck), retroactive to 8/9; activated C-R Damian Miller from the DL. [8/14]
Craig Counsell is sort of the Snakes’ de facto utility infielder, playing regularly but splitting his time between second, third and short. However, with the Paycheck Twins–Matt Williams and Jay Bell–both back off of the DL, and with Junior Spivey holding down second while Tony Womack keeps getting starts at short, the Snakes can afford to be without Counsell for a couple of weeks while his neck heals up. The way things are going, their lead in the NL West seems more likely to go to ten games before Labor Day than come down to five or less, especially with six of their next nine coming against the Cubs.
