Joe Maddon on Why Delmon Young

The favorite manager of many sabermetricians takes an unexpected turn in explaining why he's been giving up the platoon advantage willingly at DH.

In response to this conversation among Jonah Keri, Sam Miller and DRaysBay, I asked Joe Maddon at his pregame press conference in Boston about the decision to make right-handed-hitting Delmon Young his DH against righties as opposed to the left-handed Matt Joyce. Boston will pitch righties John Lackey, Clay Buchholz and Jake Peavy in Games 2, 3 and 4 respectively.

Michael Cuddyer's Ink Is Black

A batting title removes Cuddyer from a large subset of humans and puts him in a small subset of humans. Many better players will never follow him :(

One thing Michael Cuddyer can never be is the greatest hitter ever without black ink. Cuddyer colored his player page by winning the National League’s batting title, an achievement I didn’t notice happening and won’t remember caring about that will, subtly, affect how I think about Michael Cuddyer every time I look up his career stats.
