Brian Howard

Born: 04/25/1995 (Age: 24)
Bats: Right Throws: Right
Height: 6' 9" Weight: 213
Mechanics
What looks to be a normal stride length, but is actually long step due to 6-foot-9 frame and long limbs. Front toe points toward home plate with hips closed with tension in surprisingly bendy core. Elbow spirals up into clean arm action from three-quarters arm slot with major extension towards home plate.

Pitch Type Future Grade Sitting Velocity Peak Velocity Report
Fastball 50 90-92 93 Flat four-seamer comes from extreme arm angle. Perceived velocity higher than gun reading due to extension towards home plate. Effectively commands in/out and uses well at top of zone.
Cutter 60 85-86 87 Plus cutter with plus glove-side action and excellent feel for the pitch within and outside the zone. Sequences well with four-seamer to keep hitters off balance.
Curveball 50 79-82 83 81-82 when sharp, with average true curve shape and average depth. Inconsistent feel and leaves it up at the knees at times. Occasionally takes something off at 79 to give hitters different speed for strike.
Changeup 45 81-82 83 Good arm speed and deception, but is flat with little to no arm-side fade. True change of pace pitch.
Overall

Howard utilizes his height for both effective velocity and extreme angle to attack hitters in/out with his 4-seamer/cutter combo. He understands how to keep hitters off balance by locating fastball on edge of zone, then breaking cutter off and mixing in a curveball that he can throw for strikes or break off the plate and the occasional changeup. Howard's surprisingly good body control and impressive athleticism for his size allows him to work with average command of the zone.

If Howard is unable to refine the consistency of his curveball, he may be more suited to an up-and-down/emergency starter role. If he can improve the command and consistency of the breaking ball, he could land in a spot in the back of someone's rotation.
