Hitter of the Day: Yoan Moncada, 2B, Boston Red Sox (Surprise Saguaros) 3-5, 2B, HR.
Moncada had an abysmal 20 PA taste of major-league action in 2016 but don’t let that dim your view of Moncada’s potential. His profile features a bucket full of 6s and 5s with 7 speed and he showcased that power with a double and a home run in his first taste of Arizona Fall League action.
Pitcher of the Day: Josh Staumont, RHP, Kansas City Royals (Surprise Saguaros) 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO.
Staumont has the qualities to become a high-leverage reliever at the highest level. He has elite-level velocity and a plus-potential curveball, which would pair well at the end of any bullpen.
Best of the Rest:
Hunter Cole, RF, San Francisco Giants (Scottsdale Scorpions) 2-4, 2B, HR. He’s an older prospect who shows average power, but he has a considerable amount of swing and miss in his game.
Nick Gordon, SS, Minnesota Twins (Surprise Saguaros) 3-4, 2 RS. Gordon has a wide assortment of tools but none of them pop out. He’s a nice player, just not a great one.
Taylor Ward, C, Los Angeles Angels (Scottsdale Scorpions) 2-2, 2 2B. Ward is known more for his defensive chops where he showcases a special arm. He has an advanced approach at the plate but there isn’t much power in the profile.
Carson Kelly, C, St. Louis Cardinals (Glendale Desert Dogs) 2-3, HR. Kelly was a high-school pitcher who converted to playing third and is now converting to catcher. His receiving skills have made marked improvements in 2016 and there’s always been some power in the profile.
Dillon Tate, RHP, New York Yankees (Scottsdale Scorpions) 2 IP, 1 H, 1 RA, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO. Tate really struggled with his command and his stuff in 2016 before finding some semblance of consistency with New York after being traded from Texas.
Andy Ibanez, 2B, Texas Rangers (Surprise Saguaros) 2-4, 2 2B. Ibanez has some strength and shows a lot of barrel ability in the swing. His power is gap-oriented in nature but he can hit a few out.
Fight Another Day:
Yairo Munoz, SS, Oakland Athletics (Mesa Solar Sox) 0-3, 2 SO. Tough night for Munoz, who has some power in the profile but an approach that cuts him down against more advanced arms. He has some adjustments to make.
Corey Oswalt, RHP, New York Mets (Scottsdale Scorpions) 2 IP, 4 H, 4 RA, 3 BB, 1 SO. He’s working back from shoulder injury, so expect the command and outings to be erratic. He sits in the low 90s with a slider that projects to average. Notes
