Seattle Mariners acquire OF-L Mallex Smith and OF-L Jake Fraley in exchange for C-R Mike Zunino and OF-R Guillermo Heredia [11/7]

Being honest with yourself is supposed to hurt. Sure, there’s the promise of future improvement, and for future bouts of frank introspection to hurt less, but in the moment, it’s about seeing one’s flaws as they actually are.  

An uncensored look at themselves probably drove Seattle’s decision-making on Wednesday, as they traded Mike Zunino, the third overall pick in 2012 and a multi-year starter, to Tampa for CF Mallex Smith. The Mariners knew pretty clearly that their winter would begin the same way it had each offseason since an autoimmune disease sunk Franklin Gutierrez‘s career: By searching desperately for a center fielder.
