Welcome to the Minor League Update. Every day, we tell you the latest about what happened to the prospects you care about, and maybe a few more you should. Here’s who made waves yesterday:
Hitter of the Day
Liover Peguero, SS, Pittsburgh Pirates (Triple-A Indianapolis): 3-5, 2B, 2 HR, SB.
After ample opportunity in 2023, Peguero’s struggles at the dish have been more pronounced in 2024. Boxed out by a preponderance of intriguing middle infielders in Pittsburgh, Peguero needs more days like this to solidify a profile that has a troublesome strikeout rate weighing him down.
Pitcher of the Day
Isaac Coffey, RHP, Boston Red Sox (Double-A Portland): 5 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 11 K, 0 BB.
Pacing himself and punching out opponents, Coffey has now struck out 123 in 97.0 frames this season. The Oral Roberts product has been a highly effective innings-eater wielding an arm slot rarely utilized by starters. Coffey slings the ball from a low sidearm delivery much like a forehand frisbee throw, evading bats despite not always scraping 90 mph on his heater.
Reid Detmers, LHP, Angels (Triple-A Salt Lake): 7 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 9 K, 1 BB, 1 HRA.
An extremely unlucky season for Detmers has left him back with the Bees, burying hitters as is to Bee expected despite a buzzy dinger bug.
Rhett Lowder, RHP, Reds (Triple-A Louisville): 6 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 7 K, 0 BB.
Nothing quiet about Lowder’s International League debut, as the seventh pick of the 2024 draft has already rocketed up to the top of the food chain in the minors.
Manuel Beltre, 2B/SS, Blue Jays (Low-A Dunedin): 3-5, 3B, HR, SB.
Treated to a taste of stateside ball each of the past three seasons, Beltre is still just 20 years old. His offensive numbers haven’t moved significantly, however, leaving the athletic middle infielder’s power-speed displays like Thursday fewer and further between.
Brandon Birdsell, RHP, Cubs (Triple-A Iowa): 6 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 9 K, 0 BB.
Flying through the system, Birdsell is scratching the edges of a big league promotion just a year after his selection out of Texas Tech.
Travis Adams, RHP, Twins (Double-A Wichita): 6 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 10 K, 1 BB.
Despite more middling physicality, Adams is able to outdo the Texas League with a modern combo of high heat and hard breaking balls.
Aidan Miller, SS, Phillies (High-A Jersey Shore): 3-3, HR, BB.
Philly’s phirst round pick phrom 2023 has phaced prophessional pitching with the same advanced approach he displayed as a prep.
George Valera, OF, Guardians (Triple-A Columbus): 3-5, 2 HR.
Reaching as high as no. 33 on our 2022 preseason Top-101 list, Valera has yet to solve Triple-A, or his troubles with high-level secondaries. The 23-year-old still has immense power, as displayed last night.
Others of Note
Dylan O’Rae, 2B, Brewers (Double-A Biloxi): 4-5, 2B, 3B.
Zyhir Hope, OF, Dodgers (Low-A Rancho Cucamonga): 3-3, HR, BB, SB.
DaShawn Keirsey Jr., OF, Twins (Triple-A St. Paul): 4-4, 3B, HR, SB.
Alejandro Rosario, RHP, Rangers (High-A Hickory): 5 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 9 K.
Yorman Gomez, RHP, Guardians (High-A Lake County): 7 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 1 HRA.
Malvin Valdez, OF, Reds (Low-A Daytona): 3-3, 3B, 2 BB.
Keyner Benitez, LHP, Marlins (Low-A Jupiter): 5 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 7 K, 1 BB.
Fabian Pertuz, SS, Cubs (Double-A Tennessee): 3-4, HR, SB.
Drake Baldwin, C, Braves (Triple-A Gwinnett): 2-4, HR, BB.
Jansel Luis, SS, Diamondbacks (Low-A Visalia): 3-5, 2B, 3B, SB.
