POSITION OVERVIEW:
This is an office-based position that works closely with department leadership to provide support across all areas of the Pro Scouting operation.
· Power-using decision-making and valuation materials for player analysis and evaluation
· Driving progress and improvements in the pro player acquisition process
· Administration, quality control, and operational support alongside scouts and acquisition specialists.
Additionally, the role helps manage office Associate support in Baseball Operations.
DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
The Pro Scouting department is responsible for evaluation, information synthesis, valuation analysis, and decision-making recommendations for player acquisitions across all professional leagues, including: Major & Minor Leagues, Independent Leagues, and Professional Winter Leagues. The department collaborates across baseball ops domains to leverage organizational knowledge and help drive decisions of professional players across all acquisition avenues.
RESPONSIBILITIES
-
- Implement and improve processes across all areas of the pro acquisition operation with a focus on advancements in workflow, tools, evaluative methods, decision-making, and staff development.
- Assist department leadership in all vetting processes and comprehensive analysis for potential acquisitions.
- Power use internal decision-making and valuation materials.
- Work closely with Pro Scouting, Baseball Analytics, Strategy, Player Development, and Systems teams to probe analytical models and tools, identifying opportunities for improvement. Collaborate across baseball ops domains to identify and drive research opportunities that will enhance player evaluation.
- Evaluate pro players across assigned areas of responsibility using a hybrid approach of video and live scouting methods combined with internal information.
- Work closely with remote staff and help coordinate and manage coverage assignments and responsibilities.
- Generate and manage target lists using internal tools to help drive potential acquisitions across assigned areas.
- Oversee department Associate and their development.
- Own a heavy workload of administrative tasks including, but not limited to:
- o Help manage the expense submission and approval process. Contribute to budget management process.
- o Maintain and enhance departmental information and communication platforms.
- o Support remote staff in use of baseball software applications.
- o Work with Systems teams to manage quality control of accurate video and data streams.
COMPETENCIES

- Ability to interact deeply with predictive modeling groups and analytical outputs to integrate and apply to decision-making processes.
- Command of valuation frameworks and principles, and the ability to collaborate inter-departmentally to iterate and improve applied valuation methodologies.
- Experience with and aptitude for player analysis and evaluation (subjective and objective) and a knowledge of baseball markets across acquisition spaces, transactional/operational areas, and other domains.
- Ability to apply evaluation and valuation expertise in the respective planning and decision-making processes.
- A strong understanding of and ability to relate to the demands, challenges, and needs of both field and office staff.
- Command of end-to-end processes that power decisions and ability to contribute to improvements; ability to design effective and efficient processes within the Amateur Domestic Scouting department and inter-departmentally, and to act as a strong resource for leadership in the planning and execution of departmental priorities.
- Ability to connect with and respect people from different backgrounds and cultures, including players, families, coaches, agents, trainers, and others.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

- Proficiency with modern database technologies including SQL.
- Experience with programming languages (e.g., C, Python, Matlab or R) is beneficial but not required.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office required.
- Experience with various video applications like TruMedia, BATS, Synergy, etc. is beneficial but not required.
- Ability to work evening and weekend hours as required.

The Boston Red Sox seek a Director, Baseball Systems to lead the software development and data engineering teams responsible for developing software and managing the data infrastructure for Baseball Operations. - Facilitate cross-departmental communication, particularly with non-technical staff
- Stay informed on modern technologies, such as AI, and assess their potential impact on development plans

- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or related field
- 7+ years of software development experience, including a management or team lead role
- Proficiency in multiple programming languages and frameworks (e.g., C#, Python, TypeScript, JavaScript, Angular, React)
- Expertise in relational databases, database design, architecture, and SQL optimization
- Experience designing data models for Snowflake or similar data warehouses
- Experience with Kubernetes, containerization, and familiarity with DevOps tools and concepts.
- Experience with CI/CD in both on-premises and cloud environments
- Track record of delivering complex software projects under tight deadlines
