An Agent's Take

The Small World

by Joshua Kusnick

July was a very satisfying month. A couple months ago, I wrote about going through the free agent process with my client, Jeremy Jeffress. Late in July, Jeremy was added to the Brewers’ 40-man roster and called up to the big leagues again. In his first outing, against Cincinnati, his first pitch was clocked at 98. His last was 101. The outing went as well as it possibly could have and Jeremy has since thrown 8 2/3 innings while allowing only one run. When the Brewers came to Tampa and I got to catch up in person with Jeremy for the first time since April, Adam McCalvey caught a great moment in my career:

It was genuinely—and I hate to cite this film, but…—a Jerry Maguire moment. I really think Jeremy has figured things out and is finally in a position to success after so many years, but regardless of how things go I will always have a great reminder of that special moment that rarely happens between agent and player.

Continued good luck to Jeremy, during his brief time with Toronto I learned of the back story of his health and have been pulling for him ever since.

"I was exposed to the club side early"? Anything you can share in this regard? (I understand maybe not)

I think I've covered my history in the game before. Brief rundown, was the batboy for the orioles in spring games as a kid, worked with one club as a teenager, jumped to agent side in my early 20's.

How do you help players deal with injuries? Do agents work to help players get medical care, physical therapy, assistance with living arrangements while dealing with injuries? Does an agent set up contacts for a player to discuss medical and rehabilitation issues with medical practitioners or other players who had similar injuries?

Something about how players see themselves, and how you as an agent have to be both supportive and realistic? Do players usually have a fairly good idea of what they're worth and their importance or otherwise to a team?

I think I covered this with the first run of stories back in 10 or at least close to this. Its a VERY fine line. I mean I have to be honest with guys but at the same time I work for them I believe in them and I stick with guys up and down.

The process of getting guys spots in winter ball perhaps? I guess that's more team than agent although maybe not for guys who are free agents.

Might be some stories of dealing with odd things that come up when your players are in a foreign country.

Does an agent negotiate a deal to get the player in the Minor League teams of video games (like MLB 2014)?

Only 40 man guys end up in games and its negotiated by the MLBPA unless a player is cover guy that's negotiated by the agent (or should be)
