Thirty-nine home runs were hit Friday night. It's time like these I wish I could hire 20 interns to do my work for me. Sheesh.
Let's get to the trots!
Home Run of the Day: Justin Upton, Arizona Diamondbacks – 24.17* seconds [video]
Technically Prince Fielder's home run was longer (see the video – make sure to watch for the popcorn) and Carlos Santana's was more dramatic (walkoff grand slam, but we'll be talking about that in a minute), but I feel compelled to give the Home Run of the Day to Justin Upton. Every time he connects on a ball, it is an absolute monster of a blast. I don't know how long it's going to take, but, soon enough, he's going to be a national star. I'm betting it happens well before he blows away the competition in his home town Home Run Derby.
Slowest Trot: Carlos Santana, Cleveland Indians – 25.55 seconds [video]
You can't really fault a guy for having the slowest home run of the night when his was a game-winning, walkoff grand slam. It came at the end of a topsy-turvy night that saw the Indians tie it up at 5 with two home runs in the seventh inning. It's hard not to love Santana's trot, with his twinkle-toes performance right before jumping onto the plate.
Quickest Trot: Jason Heyward, Atlanta Braves – 18.17 seconds [video]
Jason Heyward's a bit of a puzzle. On any given home run, he can break out an 18-second trot like on Friday, but you often see him in the 20-22 second range too even with no one on base. It's all on a whim, I guess. The only other quick trotter I can think of who is a bit inconsistent like that is Josh Hamilton.
