It's not clear he gets injured more often than average, but his recovery time from these injuries seems excessive.
I wish I had a better answer than simply, I don't know why Ellsbury takes longer. It might have something to do with the degree of injury to the ligaments and capsule. Maybe the Red Sox are hiding other findings like a small labrum tear. Or he could just be that random person who takes longer to heal from injuries.
We just don't know why yet.
