Prospect of the Weekend

Tyler O’Neill, OF, Cardinals (Triple-A, Memphis): 8-16, 6 R, 2B, 4 HR, 10 RBI, 3 K.
O’Neill doesn’t have much to prove in Triple-A this year and should be the next in a long line of Cardinals prospects to come up to the big leagues and contribute. At his best, O’Neill should be a middle-of-the-order slugger that pounds balls to all fields and leads the way offensively once he settles in against big league pitching. O’Neill will arrive quickly if he keeps up anything close to this pace, but should arrive by mid-season even if he posts just modest numbers in Memphis.

Friday, April 6th

Drew Ellis, 3B, Diamondbacks (High-A, Visalia): 2-5, R, 2 2B, 3 RBI.
Jumping straight to High-A from short-season ball, Ellis is a polished college hitter with a solid approach and plus power, particularly to the pull side. If Ellis can continue to control at-bats the way he did in college, he should be a quick mover through the D’Backs minor league system.
