I don't understand your thinking on the Tommy Pham portion of the White Sox trade. Pham is 36 years old who was available to all teams this offseason and was so coveted he had to take a minor league deal at the end of spring training with the worst team in the history of baseball, then he goes out and plays like a replacement player. That sounds like a salary dump that probably cost the Sox an extra prospect not someone who should have brought in a prospect.

The winter is pretty irrelevant. Most teams think they can do better in the offseason, or want to give other guys a shot. At the deadline needs are known and internal options less available. WAR isn't really a useful metric to be using here. He's very good at hitting lefties, a particular skill set teams value at the deadline. There's no way Pham cost them a prospect nor that they're so desperate to unload money that they'd lose a prospect for including him.
